National-level powerlifter held for theft: Delhi Police

“Sumeet has participated in powerlifting competitions up to the national level and even won a gold medal at a state-level competition three years ago,” said a police officer.

A national-level powerlifter and his associates were arrested for allegedly robbing two youths of Rs 4 lakh cash and a scooter in outer Delhi’s Rohini area, said police Tuesday.

Police said the accused, identified as Sumeet, resorted to crime as he was financially not stable.

“Sumeet has participated in powerlifting competitions up to the national level and even won a gold medal at a state-level competition three years ago,” said a police officer.

After he finished his graduation from a university in Haryana, Sumeet did not get a decent job. He started driving a taxi in Delhi, but his income was not enough to support himself and his girlfriend,” said the officer.

On February 29, Sumeet and his associates — Naveen Tota and Honey — allegedly attacked two young men on a scooter with bricks in Rohini Sector 5.

They fled with the two-wheeler and a bag containing Rs 4 lakh in cash which the men were carrying.
