Delhi Municipal bypolls: Cong releases list of candidates

The list features two members of the Youth Congress and two women candidates.

With bypolls for 13 municipal wards in the capital scheduled to be held next month, the Congress Wednesday released its list of candidates. According to party spokesperson Sharmistha Mukherjee, the average age of the candidates in the list is 40 years and has been prepared keeping in mind the demands of the constituencies.

The list features two members of the Youth Congress and two women candidates. “Sudha Sinha, who had joined the party recently, is a social worker. She will not be contesting the reserved woman ward (Munirka) but her home constituency of Matiala. The candidate from the reserved seat is Yogita Rathi,” Mukherjee said.

Mukherjee claimed the candidates had been named following wide ranging consultations with the ground-level workers and extensive surveys in the areas going to poll. Party’s Delhi unit chief Ajay Maken had earlier pointed out that internal surveys give the party an edge owing to anti-incumbency against the AAP in the state and the BJP at the municipal level.

“Senior party leaders, former MPs and MLAs have been actively involved on the ground and in the screening procedure for selecting the candidates in these wards. One round of door-to-door campaigning has already been conducted,” Mukherjee added.

These 13 seats have remained unrepresented in the Municipal Corporations of Delhi since councillors resigned to contest in the Delhi Assembly elections held in December 2013. While AAP released its list of candidates in March this year, the BJP is yet to declare its candidates for the bypolls. The Congress has fielded Ashok Bhardwaj from Quamruddin Nagar, Bhagmal Sharma from Shalimar Bagh North, Satpal Sethi in Nawada and Pankaj Luthra in Jhilmil, among others.
