Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi has been personally examining pollution hotspots in the city to address the issue, according to Aam Aadmi Party. Oberoi has plans to visit the pollution hotspot in Harkesh Nagar on Friday after visiting the hotspot in RK Puram on Tuesday, the hotspot in Punjabi Bagh on Wednesday, and the hotspot in Civil Lines on Thursday.

“Shelly Oberoi herself sprinkled water with a water sprinkling machine on Ground Zero,” Wednesday. She “slammed officials for negligence in pollution control,” Thursday, according to the Aam Aadmi Party’s press statement.

During her visit, she instructed officials to carry out large-scale water sprinkling with anti-smog guns in heavily polluted areas. She also expressed grave concern over the pollution situation.

“The corporation is taking strict action against garbage burners and violators of construction and demolition (C&D) waste rules…Construction activities at sites have been strictly banned in all zones. Collective effort is needed to deal with pollution,” she said, as per the AAP. Three smog guns, four water sprinkling machines and 27 teams are working round the clock to reduce dust pollution in the civil lines zone.

The officials are currently emphasising J J cluster dwellers to adopt options like gas cooking instead of burning fires in the open, the statement said.

Meanwhile, the BJP’s Leader of Opposition at the MCD, Raja Iqbal Singh, criticised the AAP-led MCD for not taking adequate measures towards tackling pollution. “The Aam Aadmi Party promised to make all roads and streets in Delhi pothole-free, but so far, no concrete steps have been taken, leading to an increase in the number of dust particles in the air and rising air pollution levels,” he said.

Singh also claimed that the mechanical street sweepers are not functioning properly, and water sprinkling is not being carried out in the right way.

He said, “The mayor is only visiting various areas to take photos but she lacks any roadmap or strategy to reduce air pollution levels….construction activities are still ongoing in various parts of Delhi, which the municipal corporation is failing to control.”
