A 20-year-old man allegedly stabbed his female friend on a road in Delhi Cantonment on Sunday night – two days before her 20th birthday – before stabbing himself with a knife after she reportedly rejected his proposal to continue their relationship, police said. Both are recuperating at a hospital.

The police said the accused worked at a grocery shop. He had known the woman for a year and the two were friends, they added. “In her statement, the victim has said that she and the man were in a romantic relationship for the past one year. But now as she did not want to be with him, there was a dispute,” said DCP (South West) Surender Chaudhary.

Around 9.30 pm, the police received a call about two persons lying injured near the Kirby bus stop. They said that CCTV camera footage showed the two walking together in the area hours before the incident. “They got into a heated argument, and the man stabbed her from behind with a knife on her neck and below her chest. He then stabbed himself in the stomach,” an officer said.

Both were admitted to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment.

The police said the forensic team has collected blood samples, the weapon used in the crime and a pair of woman’s sandals from the spot.

The police said that in her statement, the woman has admitted to have been in a year-long relationship with the man, who has been booked by the Delhi Cantonment police station. They are waiting to question the accused after they receive a go-ahead from the doctors, they added.

The woman, whose birthday is on April 8, had come to Delhi with her family a year ago from her village in Uttar Pradesh.

At the hospital, her mother, a domestic help and the primary breadwinner for the family, said: “I don’t know the boy, I just want my daughter back.”

The woman’s sister added, “When my father married someone else, we left our village and came here…” The victim and her brother used to work at a sari shop. And it was at this shop in Delhi Cantonment that she met the man.
