Delhi govt to work with corporates to clean Yamuna, tackle pollution

Under efforts to revive Yamuna, curb air pollution, and remove garbage heaps, the Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has urged industries to establish a “corpus” fund under their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives during a programme held on Monday at Raj Niwas.

In the programme titled “Revival of Yamuna and Delhi – A CSR Dialogue”, Gupta encouraged industries to undertake tree plantation drives under their CSR programmes to help nourish Delhi’s environment.

The dialogue was presided over by Lieutenant Governor of Delhi (L-G) Vinay Kumar Saxena, Gupta, and Water Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh. Representatives from the corporate sector and industry bodies also attended the event.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the BJP government plans to collaborate with the industry and corporate sector to develop effective solutions for tackling environmental pollution.

Gupta assured that the Delhi Jal Board (DJB) would provide industries with a list of projects where CSR funds could be directly utilized.

“The CM was clear that keeping the Yamuna clean and pure is a top priority of her government. She added that her administration intends to restore the river to its original pristine form, which the people of Delhi also long for,” the CMO stated.

Officials noted that the DJB presented a roadmap outlining areas where partnerships could be established with industry stakeholders.

During the event, Saxena highlighted three major challenges inherited by the Delhi government—Yamuna river pollution, towering solid waste heaps, and air pollution.

He emphasized that while the government is taking every possible step to address these issues, success will only be possible if all sections of society, particularly the corporate sector, contribute through CSRThe government also appealed to industries to adopt drains and establish small sewage treatment plants, to curtail waste discharge into Yamuna.

The CMO further stated that the DJB, industry organizations, and other concerned departments will hold additional deliberations to prepare a concrete action plan with time-bound goals and specific outcomes to address these challenges.

Following the formulation of the action plan, another high-level meeting of a similar nature will be organised, officials said.
