The Delhi government on Tuesday said that approval for the transfer of funds for the rapid rail project, which will connect the capital and Meerut through a high-speed corridor once complete, was given last month but the finance secretary is yet to give the go-ahead for releasing the funds.

The government, which was pulled up by the Supreme Court over the issue again on Tuesday, said in a statement that it supports the project and welcomes the SC order.

“The first tranche of funds (approximately Rs 80 crore) was released a few months ago. The file for the release of the remaining funds was approved by the Transport Minister and sent to the Finance Secretary over a month ago, yet the funds haven’t been released. As a result, the Delhi government had to face adverse comments in the SC today,” it said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party, meanwhile, cornered the government and said it had acted recklessly and had misplaced priorities.

Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Ramvir Singh Bidhuri, called the Supreme Court’s intervention a significant blow to the Delhi government.

“This also indicates what the priorities of the AAP government in Delhi are. This government is running only based on false propaganda,” he said.

Delhi BJP Secretary Bansuri Swaraj, meanwhile, said that it was unfortunate that the Supreme Court has intervened to get work done.

In the last three years, Rs 1,100 crore and this year Rs 550 crore have been budgeted by the Delhi government for advertisements… The Kejriwal government is a government with excuses, a government engaged in publicity and propaganda,” she said.
