Former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal shows a report of The Indian Express while speaking on the law and order situation in Delhi, in the Assembly on Friday. (PTI)Former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal on Friday attacked the BJP and Union Home Minister Amit Shah over what he called “Delhi’s deteriorating law and order situation”. He was speaking during the last Delhi Assembly session scheduled this year.
Accusing the BJP of turning Delhi into the “gangster capital of the world”, he cited the increase in extortion calls and shootouts in broad daylight. In Delhi, which is a Union Territory with special powers, subjects such as law and order, policing and land come under the Centre.
Kejriwal also cited a news report by The Indian Express, titled ‘Gangsters enter the neighbourhood’, during his speech and listed some incidents related to shooting and extortion that had taken place in the city, including the murder of a gym owner in Greater Kailash, allegedly by the Lawrence Bishnoi-Hashim Baba gang.
“People are receiving extortion calls. Gang wars and shootouts are happening openly – what we used to see in films has become Delhi’s reality. Kidnapping and rape are becoming increasingly common,” he added.
The former CM also questioned the influence of the Lawrence Bishnoi gang in Delhi. “How is Lawrence Bishnoi’s gang being allowed to wreak havoc in Delhi? Lawrence Bishnoi, lodged in Sabarmati Jail in BJP-ruled Gujarat, is running an extortion racket from there. How is this happening under Amit Shah’s watch?”
Kejriwal, questioning Shah, said, “Delhi’s law and order situation has deteriorated rapidly. He has failed to manage Delhi… How is this happening under Amit Shah’s watch… Is this acceptable? Has he thrown Delhi into the hands of gangsters and run away?”
Meanwhile, leader of Opposition, Vijender Gupta, was marshalled out during the first day of the Winter Session. Later, the remaining BJP MLAs also staged a walkout.
Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva said that several people in Delhi had lost their lives because of the AAP government’s failures. “If Arvind Kejriwal thinks that highlighting crime statistics will overshadow his failures, he should know that Delhiites are demanding answers not just for waterlogging and 50 deaths due to electric shocks but also for the 150 deaths caused by cold in January,” he added.

“Even as the Assembly reconvenes today, presumably for the last time before the elections, the agenda and list of businesses so far does not reflect the laying/tabling of CAG reports pertaining to government departments,” Saxena wrote. “It pains me for having to write this communication to a chief minister heading a government, which won popular electoral mandate on the plank of transparency and accountability in governance,” he added.
According to L-G House officials, 14 CAG reports are yet to be tabled in the Assembly.
