Delhi: Day after Jaitpur wall collapse kills 7, man arrested for illegally accommodating families on plot

A day after seven persons were killed as a wall collapsed in Jaitpur area of South East Delhi following heavy rain, a man was arrested from the Hari Nagar area for illegally housing several families on the plot, said police. The landlord, however, continues to be on the run.
The accused, Kurshid, 49, was arrested after a case under sections 109 (death by negligence), 125 (endangering human life) and 290 (negligent building works) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the Jaitpur police station.
“During investigation, the accused, a tenant who had accommodated families to dump scrap at the plot, namely Kurshid (aged 49 years), a native of West Bengal, has been arrested. Another accused (the land owner), Rajbir Bhati, a resident of Hari Nagar Village, Jaitpur is absconding. Efforts are being made to apprehend him,” DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari said.
On Saturday, around 9 am, a boundary wall of a samadhi (a memorial) collapsed onto the hutments in a jhuggi cluster in Hari Nagar village, killing seven persons, including two children.
Station House Officer of Jaitpur PS and his team broke through the collapsed portion of the wall to reach those trapped. Eight people were pulled out and rushed to AIIMS Trauma Centre and Safdarjung Hospital. Only one of them survived.
The victims were identified as Baby Ruksana (7), Baby Hasina (7), Rabiul (27), Rubina (25), Safiqul (27), Muttus (50), and Doli (28). Hasibul (25), the sole survivor, is currently being treated at Safdarjung Hospital, said police.
