The Delhi Police have arrested a couple who allegedly kidnapped a one-month-old child from a pavement while he was sleeping with his parents on the footpath in the Kotwali area on August 24, officials said.

According to the police, the arrested couple told the police they planned to kidnap a boy to fulfil their elder daughter’s wish to tie rakhi to her brother who died last year. The couple told the police that their son died after falling from the terrace and their 17-year-old daughter did not know about his death.

“So when they chanced upon the complainant woman sleeping with her son and husband on the footpath at the spot they abducted him,” said the DCP. DCP (North) Sagar Singh Kalsi said that the toddler’s parents stated that they were sleeping at the Chatta Rail Chowk and noticed that their one-month-old son was missing around 3 am and could not find him despite several searches.

“We scanned the footage and saw a motorcyclist with a woman riding pillion making several rounds of the area…further intelligence led us to a couple, Sanjay Gupta and Anira Gupta,” said the DCP. A case of kidnapping was lodged and the police started scanning the CCTV cameras around the spot.
