In an attempt to promote greenery, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) is conducting a tree census, Mayor Shelly Oberoi said Wednesday.
“On the lines of Kejriwal government, MCD’s Aam Aadmi Party government is promoting greenery, for the first time ‘Tree Census’ is being conducted in the wards,” Oberoi said in a statement.
The MCD is expecting to complete the process within the next 15 days. The Horticulture Department will mark each tree with a serial number. In the first phase of this process, the census of trees will be done manually and in the second phase, the location and tagging of trees will be done through Artificial Intelligence. This will also be the first time that tagging of trees will be done using AI technology.
According to Oberoi, this is being done to know the actual number of trees. “This initiative will enable easy identification of trees and will also help in their pruning. Also, counting trees will help in controlling illegal tree cutting and ensuring greenery of the city,” she said.
Once the census is completed, the exact number of trees in all the wards will be known. Based on that information, tree plantation drives will be promoted in the areas that lack greenery.
Under the Green Delhi Action Plan 2023-24, about 84143 trees and 2,36,092 bushy plants have been planted by the Horticulture Department till November. Last year, 8 mini forests were created using Miyanwaki technology, the recent budget has proposed to develop 5 forests based on this technology.
“The Municipal Corporation of Delhi is making every possible effort to increase the green cover in Delhi,” Oberoi said.
