“The allegations of torture and harassment by the woman were physical and mental in nature. During investigation, it emerged that Kumar had questioned the woman at Vijay Vihar police station and videographed the act, violating several rules and regulations,” said an officer.

Sources said police were on the lookout for the woman’s live-in partner, Ram Niwas, after his wife filed a complaint against him. Kumar had allegedly questioned the woman on Niwas’s whereabouts. Niwas works as a cable operator in Vijay Vihar and has a criminal record.

Sources also said Kumar was in constant touch with Niwas’s wife. In the last six months, he had called her up many times from his official phone number, raising concerns, added the sources.

Despite police personnel refusing to come forward to depose against the SHO, the matter was thoroughly investigated, said the officer. Kumar was produced before a court Saturday which sent him to two days’ police custody.

Police said the woman committed suicide by consuming a poisonous substance outside Tis Hazari Court Friday evening. A civil defence volunteer found her unconscious. She was taken to a hospital where doctors declared her dead, said police.
