Eye on Assembly polls next year, Congress launches month-long Delhi Nyay Yatra

The Congress is hoping for a comeback in the city; it has been out of power since 2013 and failed to win a single seat in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly polls which the AAP had won with a thumping majority.

With an eye on the 2025 Assembly elections, the state Congress Monday launched a month-long ‘Delhi Nyay Yatra’. Inspired by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra, the campaign aims to revive the party’s voter base in the city while putting pressure on the ruling AAP and the BJP. Starting from the Gandhi Samadhi, the yatra will span four phases from November 8 to December 4 and will cover all 70 constituencies.

The Congress is hoping for a comeback in the city; it has been out of power since 2013 and failed to win a single seat in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly polls which the AAP had won with a thumping majority. The event, meanwhile, ruled out any remaining possibility of a tie-up between the AAP and the Congress, like during the Lok Sabha polls.

Inaugurating the event, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chief Devender Yadav said 250-300 Congress workers would participate round the clock in the yatra, with planned night halts along the way: “During the yatra, workers will closely interact with people to understand their problems and find solutions to their long-standing issues.”

“In the past 11 years, no issue affecting people has been addressed by the Arvind Kejriwal-run government. They came to power after making rosy promises, but ended up looting the public without fulfilling any of them; neither has the Modi government fulfilled its promises,” he alleged.

At the event, a launch video criticised the AAP and the BJP, alleging that both parties had undermined Ambedkar’s constitutional values. The video suggested that AAP’s governance had contributed to making Delhi “a gas chamber” due to worsening pollution, neglected the waterlogging problem, ignored crumbling roads, and left street vendors and displaced residents without support. It also attacked the government over the CM’s residence.

All India Congress Committee spokesperson Pawan Khera, who was also at the event, compared the work of former Delhi CM Sheila Dikshit with the AAP’s record. “When I was approaching the stage, I was very happy to see so many people from Dikshit ji’s team here. She helped Delhi take re-birth, but work done in 15 years has now been undone by this government… They are professional liars,” he said.

Referring to AAP’s claims that pre-2015, Delhi suffered daily power cuts, Khera added, “During our rule, an association of inverter sellers approached Sheila ji to express concern over low inverter and generator sales.”

Yadav also said the AAP government relied on “free promises” without actual delivery. “Kejriwal came to power making many big promises like introducing Lokpal Bill, controlling price rise, and free power and water, but people have ended up paying inflated power bills with power distribution firms imposing various surcharges. When Congress was in power, the rate was Rs 5 per unit; it is now Rs 10,” he said.

Here’s the programme:

-Phase 1: Nov 8 to 13; it will cover 16 assembly segments from Chandni Chowk to Shalimar Bagh

-Phase 2: Nov 15 to 20; will cover 18 assembly constituencies from Karawal Nagar to Jangpura

-Phase 3: Nov 22 to 27, covering another 16 constituencies (Bawana to Dwarka)

-Phase 4: Nov 29 to Dec 4, covering 20 constituencies (from Hari Nagar to Timarpur)
