Delhi: Amid crackdown on ‘illegal immigrants’, AAP MLA gets notice

The documents were seized, as per officials, during a “major crackdown on alleged illegal immigrants” on December 24, 2024, which led to the arrest of 12 people who were allegedly part of a racket facilitating illegal immigration of Bangladeshi nationals in the Capital.

Earlier, DCP (South) Ankit Chauhan had said that among those arrested, five are Bangladeshi citizens and the rest were allegedly involved in making forged documents like voter IDs, and Aadhaar cards to facilitate the “illegal immigration process”.

“One of the key accused, who arranged the fake documents, was found in possession of Aadhaar documents with multiple signatures of MLA Mohinder Singh. As of now, it’s suspected that the MLA’s staff was involved in processing these documents as all these signatures were slightly different from the original,” the official said.

“Investigation revealed that the accused used a fake website to create fraudulent birth certificates, which were used to obtain Aadhaar cards. The documents were processed through a network of operators, including a man who ran a computer centre in Rohini, and a man who worked with an authorised Aadhaar operator at Karnataka Bank in Rohini,” the DCP said

The accused were found in possession of Bangladeshi IDs and birth certificates. As many as 21 Aadhaar cards, four voter IDs, and eight PAN cards were also recovered from the house of the accused, said police. Among the four voter IDs, one was traced to a woman, a Bangladeshi national, in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, police said. She was arrested.

Responding to the development, the AAP, in a statement, said, “It has become BJP’s standard operating procedure: weaponise government agencies to pressure opposition leaders as elections approach, undermining democratic norms.” Delhi Police comes under the jurisdiction of the Central government, ruled by the BJP.
