Eleven people were killed and 26 were injured in a major road accident in Bulandshahr district on Sunday afternoon as a pick-up van collided head-on with a bus coming from the opposite direction. Officials said the accident took place in the Salempur area on the Badaun-Meerut State Highway.
The relatives of the victims said that more than 35 labourers — working in a company in Ghaziabad that makes bread — were going in a pickup vehicle to Aheriya Nagla village in Aligarh to celebrate the festival of Raksha Bandhan.
Among those who died were eight men from a village in Aheriya Nagla village in Aligarh, identified as Mukut Singh (35), Deenanath Singh (45), Brajesh Yadav (18), Shishupal Yadav (27), Babu Singh (19), Giriraj Singh (26), Sugarpal (35), JP Yadav (18). Two residents of Bulandshahr — Omkar Singh (30) and Mahesh (28) — have been also confirmed dead.
Munesh Kumar, a relative of one of the deceased, Mukut Singh, said all those who died, and injured were from his village. “The pickup driver tried to save the vehicle but it seems the bus driver had fallen asleep. We work in Britania Delta Foods company in Ghaziabad. If he had taken a little caution, everyone would have been alive. Today the entire village is gripped with grief. No one is able to deal with this situation. Who will now take care of the families of those who have died,” asked Kumar.
An official said the bus driver was also among those hospitalised. “Today, a pickup vehicle was going from Ghaziabad towards Sambhal and a bus was coming towards Bulandshahr from Dibai and a very unfortunate accident happened near Salempur police station,” said Chandra Prakash Singh, District Magistrate, Bulandshahr.
“A total of 37 people were injured in the accident, and 10 persons among them died. Some injured were admitted to the district hospital and nine were admitted to a private hospital near the accident site. Four people, who were seriously injured, have been referred to Meerut Medical College. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also took note of the incident and has directed that appropriate medical facilities should be provided to the injured,” he said.
