A container filled with around 50 litres of acid was seized from a public toilet situated opposite Central Delhi’s GB Pant Hospital following a surprise inspection led by DCW chief Swati Maliwal.

Even as Maliwal asked MCD officials to appear before the panel Tuesday with a detailed report, the BJP said the discovery showed the mayor or local AAP councillor never inspected the toilets.

As per an official statement from DCW, the inspection was conducted Thursday night following complaints regarding issues related to public toilets for women and girls in various areas. “The commission found a large amount of acid kept in the open in the said toilet… and informed Delhi Police… The caretaker said the acid was used for cleaning toilets and is replenished every two months by senior authorities.”

Maliwal said: “This could have been used by people for criminal activities. The fact that acid is being used in public toilets for cleaning on a large-scale is unacceptable. Action should be taken against authorities for encouraging use of acid for cleaning toilets.”

The Mayor’s office said it would initiate an enquiry into the matter: “Appropriate action will be taken against whoever is found to be guilty of negligence.” The BJP in a statement said, “Mayor Dr Shelly Oberoi is answerable to the women of Delhi on this acid recovery.”

The commission also questioned the practice of fees being charged for usage of public toilets. The panel also said the toilets should be kept operational at all hours.

Maliwal said there should be no user fees for using toilets. “All the toilets should be functional all the time, and if any toilet is non-functional, strict action should be taken against the official(s) responsible for it,” she added.
