A banker died after a truck rammed into his new Wagon-R car in South Delhi on Sunday night,a few days before he was to turn 27. Identifying the victim as Gaurav Gujral, police said the truck driver — who was driving under the influence of alcohol — has been arrested.

According to police,Gujral was returning home at 11.30 pm on Sunday when the incident occurred. “The accused,Rajesh Singh,is a resident of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. Apparently drunk,he jumped the red light under the flyover in South Extension. Gujral may have thought the truck would stop because the traffic signal indicated red,but Singh rammed his vehicle into the car,” a police officer said.

Emphasising on the impact of the accident,he said the front portion of the car was completely damaged. “The impact was so bad that the car was dragged along with the truck for a few metres. Taking the victim out of the car took us a great deal of time. Gujral was bleeding profusely. He was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” he said.

Gujral’s family said he left their Shahpur Jat house at 5 pm to meet his friends in Khan Market. “As it was an off day for him,he said he wanted to catch up with his friends. At 10.45 pm,he called me up to say he was leaving Khan Market and would be home soon. He never did. At 11.15,we received a call from the police, informing us about the accident. They took him to the hospital in an autorickshaw, and we rushed to the hospital too. But he had already succumbed to his injuries by then,” said Gujral’s father Anil,a lawyer at the Patiala House court.

Gujral, who was going to turn 27 on October 19,was supposed to get married soon. Stating that he had graduated from the Delhi College of Engineering and later completed his MBA from IIFT,Anil said: “Gaurav was extremely bright and hardworking. He passed out of IIFT last year and was recruited by Yes Bank, where he had been working for the past one year. His team leader met me today at the cremation and told me that my son was bright.”

A case of causing death by negligence has been registered under Sections 279 and 304 (a) of the Indian Penal Code.
