A day before he shot Nikki, SI Vijendra Kumar got his service revolver from the malkhana in-charge of Ranhola police station saying he needed it for a raid in a robbery case, said sources.

JCP (southwestern range) Dependra Pathak said Kumar had not reported to work for the past fortnight. He joined duty Saturday afternoon. “He later asked the malkhana in-charge to issue his revolver and 10 cartridges,” Pathak added.

“We knew who he was as we had received several complaints against him. His senior officers said Kumar used to go on leave without prior intimation,” said DCP (West) Pushpendra Kumar.

According to sources, the shooting could have been sparked off by a tiff between Kumar and Nikki. Sources said Kumar went to Nikki’s house last year on her birthday to give her flowers. Her husband was at home. She filed a complaint against Kumar. “In October last year, she met JCP Pathak and complained about Kumar. She reportedly told the officer that Kumar cheated her on the pretext of marriage. Pathak directed the SHO of Uttam Nagar police station to register a complaint against Kumar,” added the sources. Nikki later filed an affidavit withdrawing the complaint, said the sources.

“Kumar allegedly asked her to withdraw the complaint and promised Rs 10 lakh in return. He paid half the amount, but was unable to pay the rest. Nikki allegedly threatened to file another complaint against him if he didn’t pay up,” said the sources.

Sources said Kumar was disturbed for the past two months and had told his batchmates that he wanted to commit suicide.
