CWG Village sports complex to open for public month-end

The sports complex at Commonwealth Games Village will finally open for public by the end of this month.

The sports complex at Commonwealth Games Village will finally open for public by the end of this month. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has said it has hired regular staff to operate and maintain the complex and is in the process of winding up last-minute work.

The “world class sporting facilities” at the complex will be available for public on pay-and-play basis.

“The hiring of regular staff on contractual basis is complete. Now,we are carrying out fencing work around the complex. Also, the process of making a cricket pitch is expected to start from next week. This work has already been awarded by us and will take 10 to 15 days to complete. All other work related to the sports complex will be ready by then and we will open the complex to public by March-end,’’ said a DDA official.

The Village sports complex will be a boon for people living in East Delhi, said DDA officials,as there are only three other DDA sports complexes in the neighbouring areas.

The Village sports complex has gymnasiums and tracks, and facilities for swimming, table tennis, football, badminton, basketball and volleyball. A spa will also be operational here.

“Technical staff will maintain the gymnasium, spa facilities, etc. Yoga and aerobics will also be introduced here. The pay-and-play facilities can be availed by paying a nominal amount, similar to the rates levied at Siri Fort Sports Complex and Yamuna Sports Complex,’’ said an official.

The new Siri Fort complex was opened for public on a pay-and-play basis from February 1. The charges here are Rs 100 per person, per day. Similar charges are levied at Yamuna Sports Complex.

As of now,DDA has no plans to offer a permanent membership for the Village sports facilities located next to Akshardham Temple in East Delhi. The expensive equipment bought for the Games has been lying unused for over a year in the 21-acre complex.

Meanwhile, the land agency is looking to raise the membership fee and pay-and-play charges at all its sports complexes, though officials say the increase will be nominal. “We have already submitted a proposal to the Lieutenant-Governor. We are waiting for his response,” an official said.
