Bhavishya Sirandhama (19), who is pursuing law, was set to appear for trials at his college in Noida on Sunday after representing his school in multiple under-19 football competitions until last year, including a tournament in Nepal. However, he has pushed off his plan to be back in a competitive playground after a stabbing incident at South Delhi’s Amar Colony area on Saturday night.
“I had my trials for the college team today. I had been struggling with an injury for months and was away from the pitch. I was finally ready to strike again. But then last night what happened was unexpected…,” said Bhavishya, who sustained a stab injury on the thigh during Saturday’s incident.
Bhavishya, whose father Vijendra is a clerk with a law firm, was with his cousin Taksh (18) near his house in Gadhi Village when he saw a group of four snatchers targeting a 42-year-old man — Mithoo.
“We heard the man (Mithoo) shouting. The group was thrashing him. Taksh and I ran towards him. One of the guys then pulled a knife and stabbed us both. Some residents came to help and caught two of the four snatchers,” he recalled.
Mithoo, a tailor, was returning home when the incident happened. “Mithoo was returning home to Gadhi Village. Near the end of Sheetla Mata Mandir, he was pushed from behind and subsequently surrounded and restrained by a group of four persons. They assaulted him and robbed his mobile phone. When he cried for help, bystanders intervened. One of the accused brandished a knife and injured Mithoo and two others – Bhavishya and Taksh,” DCP (South East) Hemant Tiwari said. Taksh, who is honing his skills as a boxer, was also injured during the snatching incident.
On Sunday, Bhavishya was resting on a cot in his two-bedroom house. He was dressed in his school football jersey, which he was supposed to wear to his trials.
But he pointed to the walker nearby, indicating his inability to be at the field. A pair of grey headphones were kept by his pillow — his only comfort before he could get to the pitch again.
“Ab kuch din tak chalna mana hai… (I can’t walk for a few days). Doctor will open stitches on that day, and then I will know..,” he said.
The incident happened around 10 pm. Mithoo had dialled up the police while he was being attacked. “A PCR call was received around 10.15 pm. The caller said, ‘Kuch log lootpaat karne aaye the, chaku maar gaye (Some people came to rob… they stabbed with a knife)’. Two PCR vehicles immediately reached the spot,” DCP Tiwari said.
Police said that once they reached the spot, Taksh and Bhavishya were already on their way to the hospital. Later, all three injured were taken to AIIMS for their medico-legal certificates, officers said.
Tiwari added, “Two of the four accused, a 21-year-old and a teenager, who were caught by the locals, were taken to the police station.” While Akash (21), was arrested, the teenager was detained. Akash has a previous case of theft filed against him and is now being questioned about the whereabouts of the other two accused.
