A Ghaziabad district court has issued the death warrant for Surinder Koli, sentenced in the Nithari serial killings case. The court has ordered that Koli be hanged at 4 am between May 24 and May 31.
The warrant was issued on May 3 by CBI judge Shyam Lal.
Dasna Jail Superintendent Viresh Raj Sharma said Koli moved a mercy petition on Sunday. We have forwarded the mercy petition to the Justice department of Uttar Pradesh, Sharma said.
Special public prosecutor J P Sharma said the death warrant was issued after the Supreme Court confirmed the death penalty awarded to Koli in the case relating to the rape and murder of 14-year-old Rimpa Haldar. He said the court has decided to hear the matter on May 13.
In February this year, the Supreme Court bench of Justices Markandey Katju and Gyan Sudha Misra confirmed the death sentence to 39-year-old Koli who has also been awarded capital punishment in three other cases.
A total of 16 cases were registered against Koli. He was sentenced to death along with Pandher by the Ghaziabad court in February 2009. The Allahabad High Court confirmed Kolis death sentence in September 2009 while acquitting Pandher of the charges.
Rimpa had gone missing in the neighbourhood of Pandhers Noida residence in early 2005.
