Congmen disrupt MCD meeting,Mayor shoots off letter to Gupta

The MCD Standing Committee was disrupted on Thursday when Congress councillors started shouting slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party and Baba Ramdev.

The MCD Standing Committee was disrupted on Thursday when Congress councillors started shouting slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party and Baba Ramdev.

Accusing Baba Ramdev of siding with the RSS and BJP,the Opposition Congress said that the Municipal Corporation of Delhi should not have given the Ramlila Maidan to Ramdev in the first place.

“He booked the ground for a yoga camp but everybody knew that his main purpose was to fast. The MCD also knew about it,and it still allowed him to erect tents there,” said Jai Kishen Sharma, the Leader of Opposition. He said that Ramdev had clear affiliations with the RSS and BJP,who have communal aspirations.

The Congress councilors also criticised the fast by social activist Anna Hazare, saying that holding the fast at Rajghat is disrespectful to Mahatma Gandhi. “It is a place of peace and quiet but Hazare supporters and BJP members have turned on loudspeakers to play songs and dance,” Sharma added.

Meanwhile, the Mayor has written to Delhi Commissioner B K Gupta, seeking an explanation as to why the MCD was not informed that police had cancelled Ramdev’s booking. In a letter written on Monday, she said Ramlila Maidan was granted to Ramdev by the MCD as it is the civic body’s property.

“I would like to know as to under what circumstances was the permission granted by MCD cancelled by the Delhi Police, and why the MCD was not informed about the cancellation of permission,” she wrote. The letter has been forwarded to the Chief Secretary of Delhi too.
