The Delhi government plans to establish geography labs like science labs in every government school to provide experimental knowledge and learning besides theory, according to officials. Most Delhi government schools currently have physics, chemistry and biology labs but no geography labs. "Geography laboratory plays a pivotal role in enriching the geographical base of a student- a necessary part of learning that exposes students to a full spectrum of disciplinary subfields- physical, human and nature-society geography as well as geographical techniques. A geography laboratory creates a friendly atmosphere, stimulates the students' imagination, and inspires them," said an official. Officials added that it is not possible to make geography teaching effective without making use of maps, charts, globes etc. With a separate geography lab, it will be easier to collect all these things at a place as it is practically impossible to take them from one place to another, they said. "Moreover, in the absence of a separate geography laboratory, teachers will not get a pleasant atmosphere which is essential for the effective teaching of geography. So, considering all the facts, we have decided to establish a well-equipped geography lab in each school," said another official.
