Starting December 1, colleges, hostels, schools and restaurants on anti-drugs drive radar: L-G Office
Officials said Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has directed the Delhi Police to intensify efforts to curb drug trafficking and consumption in collaboration with relevant agencies.

To curb increasing drug abuse, Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena has announced a month-long anti-drug campaign across the city from December 1 which would include inspections at schools, colleges, hostels, pharmaceutical stores, paan shops, clubs, and bars.
To ensure a drug-free campus environment, nodal officers will be designated and wardens will be made accountable in hostels of educational institutions, said officials from the L-G’s office.
The key aim behind the drive is to dismantle drug networks, reduce demand, and create a healthier and safer society. The drive will also involve checking at railway stations, inter-state bus terminals (ISBTs) and other places.
Officials said Delhi Police have been directed to thoroughly check and sanitise at least 200 hostels, 50 colleges, 200 schools, 200 pharmaceutical stores, 500 paan shops, all shelter homes, 200 bars and restaurants, all railway stations, all ISBTs and other public spaces.
“This aggressive initiative is part of a larger plan to make Delhi drug-free within the next three years, much ahead of the target set for making the country drug-free,” said officials, adding that the decisions were taken in the recently held 9th review meeting of the State-Level Committee Narco Coordination Centre (NCORD).
Saxena underlined that the drug menace, apart from having a direct effect on the health of youths, also had a wider international angle whereby drugs are used strategically to weaken the country’s youth and thereby the nation itself, said officials.
Officials said that the L-G also directed the Delhi Police to intensify their efforts to curb drug trafficking and consumption in collaboration with other relevant agencies. The campaign will have a multi-pronged approach. Further, advisories will be sent to teachers and parents through the Social Welfare Department.
The department will actively engage with schools and parents to educate them about the dangers of drug abuse and encourage them to monitor their children’s activities.
Saxena asked the Delhi Police to widely advertise and announce attractive awards for informants while keeping their identity confidential. He also directed that slogans, posters and banners be prominently displayed all over the city and in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses, autorickshaws and taxis against the harmful effects of the use of drugs and psychotropic substances.
Further, the director of the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) has been directed to expedite the disposal of pending cases, which will significantly contribute to prosecutions in drug-related offenses. The FSL, which had 1,260 pending cases for the last nine to 12 months, has been able to bring down the cases to 290 with the L-G’s active intervention, said officials. “He directed the FSL that the analysis in the remaining 290 cases be completed and the cases disposed of within a month and zero pendency be ensured,” said the officials.
