Arch of labna replica in the Garden of Five Senses was conceived by mexican envoy to india

The replica of the Arch of Labna, which was erected at the Garden of Five Senses at Said-ul-Ajaib,will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday. The Arch of Labna is one of the largest and most ornate architectural structures known to have been built by the Mayans.

The project was conceived by Julio Faesler, former Ambassador of Mexico to India.

“This project is part of an expression of the friendship and growing links between Mexico and India and is funded by Mexico. This Arch, located in the Yucatan region of Mexico,is an example of the classical period of Maya Culture (XI Century AD),” a Delhi Tourism official said.

“This artifact has been identified by the Mexican government to symbolise the deeper reasons, which have inspired many years of artistic, political and economic exchanges between the two countries,” a government official said.

Labna is a Mesoamerican archaeological site and ceremonial centre of the pre-Columbian Maya civilisation located in the Puuc Hills region of the Yucatán Peninsula. The Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) was entrusted with the task of erecting this structure at the Garden of Five Senses

“Garden of Five Senses has several public art pieces which is why we thought that it would be an ideal location to replicate the Arch of Labna,’’ an official said.

The Garden of Five Senses is spread over 20 acres and houses several restaurants. Delhi Tourism has also developed a cycling track inside the garden area.
