The Tis Hazari court premises on Saturday witnessed a scuffle between a family of three, including a 70-year-old woman, and their proxy lawyer, leading to the registration of three FIRs, said police.

The incident took place between 11.03 am and 11.06 am at the court premises. “Three PCR calls were received regarding the altercation,” said an officer.

When staff from the Tis Hazari court police post reached the spot, they allegedly found a group of lawyers manhandling certain persons. “Both parties were taken to the police post for inquiry,” the officer said.

Police said a man had come to the court with his sister and 70-year-old mother for a hearing in a case. His proxy lawyer also arrived with the family and had the case files with him.

A proxy lawyer is a lawyer who appears in court in place of the main or filing counsel in a case.

“The man has claimed that when he demanded the case files, the proxy lawyer refused to hand them over, leading to a scuffle. He also alleged that other lawyers intervened and manhandled him and his family, including his mother,” the officer said.

Police said the person who made the first PCR call alleged that the proxy lawyer had assaulted the man and his family members, leading to a scuffle. However, the person who made the second PCR call claimed that it was the proxy lawyer who was assaulted by the man, leading to the scuffle.

“Soon after, a third PCR call was received, and a woman lawyer claimed that when she attempted to intervene, the man and his family manhandled her, and even snatched her gold chain,” the officer said.

Based on the statements of the proxy lawyer and the woman lawyer, two FIRs were registered against the man and his family members.

The third FIR was lodged on the basis of handwritten notes provided by the man and his relatives, who are undergoing treatment at a hospital, said police.

All three FIRs were registered at the Sabzi Mandi police station.
