Delhi Mayor Shelly Oberoi inspected waste collection centres in West Zone’s Tilak Nagar and Vikaspuri wards on Tuesday, and found garbage piled up and spread onto the main roads. She directed private waste management agencies and Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) officials to clear the waste within two days and repair all collection centres.
Oberoi said she would revisit the areas for inspection after two days. During the inspection, the mayor also found a 2-3 km stretch of road near one of the collection centres in Vikaspuri ward covered with garbage to the extent that the road had to be closed. The mayor also instructed the zonal deputy commissioner to beautify the area once the garbage was cleared.
The MCD said in a press statement that the waste pile-up had led to widespread filth and foul odours in the area, and citizens constantly complained. It said a similar situation was found in the Tilak Nagar ward as well.
“Garbage was found on the road outside a waste collection centre, with stray animals roaming around. Heaps of garbage had accumulated despite a government school and dispensary near the place. Outside a newly constructed mohalla clinic, garbage was scattered on the main road, becoming a dumping point. It was even causing traffic issues,” the MCD said, adding that additional trucks and sanitation workers would be deployed to strengthen the sanitation system and remove the garbage.
