Child crushed by constable’s car

Police said when Ashok realised he had hit someone, he quickly got out to check.

A Delhi Police personnel accidentally killed a 10-month-old child while reversing his car in East Delhi’s Mandawali area.

Police said Head Constable Ashok was reversing his Ritz when the car ran over Gopal, who was playing on the street outside his house. Ashok rushed the child to hospital, where he was declared brought dead, police said.

“A case of negligence and rash driving has been registered and Ashok has been arrested. His vehicle has been impounded. Investigation is on,” a senior police officer said.

Police said Ashok was not on duty when the incident took place. He was driving his private vehicle. He had gone to a jhuggi cluster in the area, which is close to the Yamuna bridge crossing, for personal work. He was leaving the area around 3.30 pm when the incident took place, police said.

Police said when Ashok realised he had hit someone, he quickly got out to check.

He drove the child to hospital and made a PCR call.

Ashok was posted at East Delhi’s Pandav Nagar police station. He comes from Haryana and his Ritz car carries a registration number from Haryana, a police officer said.
