The Crime Branch on Saturday arrested a 28-year-old sharpshooter for his involvement in the murder of businessman Arun Gupta in 2008.
Police said Gupta’s brother-in-law Dinesh Kumar Mittal, who was involved in a property dispute with the businessman, had hired sharpshooter and contract killer Abuzar (alias Anta).
Police said Abuzar had been absconding since the broad daylight murder and was arrested from Connaught Place on Saturday morning based on a tip-off. A reward of Rs 50,000 had been declared for his arrest.
Earlier, police had arrested Dinesh Kumar Mittal, Mohammad Haroon, Afroz, Parvez, Junaid and Shakeel on the charges of murder and under the the Arms Act. Only Abuzar was at large.
In 2008, Gupta, son-in-law of the owner of Mittal Farms in Mehrauli, was driving to office when he was accosted by his killers.
“When he was about 100 yard away from his house and close to the iron gate of block-E, Kalkaji, a motorcycle rammed his car.
The businessman asked the motorcyclist to remove it. Meanwhile, two persons with firearms surrounded the car and the person on right side of the car shot at Gupta but it missed him.
“Gupta tried to escape by driving towards the roundabout of block-B, Kalkaji. But his car got stuck in a traffic jam at the roundabout. In the meantime, a person ran towards him and shot him at point-blank range. After killing him, the assailants fled on a motorcycle,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Ravindra Yadav said.
Mittal had planned to get his sister and her husband killed over the property dispute. He had paid the contract killers Rs 10 lakh for the task. Gupta was alone in the car when the attackers surrounded and killed him.
