The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Sunday launched a fresh attack on Delhi Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena over the felling of 1,100 trees in Satbari Ridge, referring to the ongoing hearing of the matter in the Supreme Court. Delhi minister and AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj accused the bureaucrats involved of “lying to protect the L-G”.

“The bureaucracy will not do work related to the Delhi Jal Board, procurement of medicines of the Health Department, paying salaries for Mohalla Clinics… but illegal work will be completed on the whims of the L-G — one signal and all the trees were cut. I requested the L-G to hold a press conference because the public is demanding answers from him,” Bharadwaj said.

Bharadwaj further alleged Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and the L-G were “trying to fool people and the apex court by saying they did not know that permission was required to cut the trees”. “The L-G has been here in Delhi for two years and he says he did not know about tree-cutting permission…how is this possible?,” he said.

Alleging connivance on the part of bureaucrats, he said, “Even if I accept that L-G Saab was not aware that the trees were cut, then did the officers mislead him? The Chief Secretary and others know that permission is needed to cut the trees. Then why has L-G Saab not taken any action till now against these officers? If the trees were cut by misleading L-G … he would have suspended these officers till now.”

No response was immediately available from the L-G or Chief Secretary on the matter.
