The Delhi Police recently arrested a ‘drug-addict’ brother-sister duo for allegedly snatching gold chains from women in South Delhi and Kartavya Path in several incidents.

The police referred to the 24-year-old woman and her 17-year-old brother as ‘Bunty-Babli’ siblings, as their crimes resembled those committed by the lead characters in the 2005 Bollywood movie Bunty Aur Babli.

“Both accused are drug addicts, and their parents also have a criminal background. Their father was a member of the infamous Thak-Thak gang and had been shot during an encounter in Uttar Pradesh,” said Ankit Chauhan, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South.

He added that their father was involved in a Rs 40 lakh robbery case in December 2018 in the Vaishali police station area of Uttar Pradesh.

“During the robbery, he opened fire on two policemen, killing one and injuring another. In that incident, their father Venkateshwar also sustained two bullet injuries, due to which he is now confined to a wheelchair,” the DCP added.

The police recovered a scooter and gold chains from the siblings’ possession.

In the recent snatching incident reported in Malviya Nagar, the police said a woman was returning on foot with her husband from the main market. The brother-sister duo allegedly came from behind on a scooty. The boy was driving the scooter, and the woman, who was wearing yellow clothes, was sitting behind, said the police.

The woman allegedly snatched the gold chain from the complainant’s neck, and both fled away on the scooter towards the lane in front of Khan Juice Corner. The police said that four other gold snatching cases have also been solved with the arrest of the duo.

The DCP said that in most cases, the role of a woman snatching the chain while a boy riding the scooter had emerged.

The team meticulously collected and analysed CCTV footage from the crime locations, which revealed that two accused, a male and a female, were involved in the snatching cases while riding a scooter.

“In the footage, the male accused was seen driving the scooty, while the female accused, seated on the pillion seat, was seen snatching gold chains from the victims. After an in-depth analysis of more than 50 CCTV cameras installed along various routes, the movement of the accused was traced up to the Dakshinpuri and Ambedkar Nagar areas,” the DCP added.

With the help of local intelligence, both suspects were identified. Subsequently, based on technical surveillance and human intelligence, a dedicated police team successfully apprehended both accused from the Pushp Vihar area in Saket.

Abhishek Bachchan and Rani Mukerji played the lead roles as partners in crime in Bunty Aur Babli, directed by Shaad Ali.
