The woman’s body was found inside the Indraprastha Park, near a boundary wall close to the railway tracks,on April 23. Her throat was slit and she had vermillion on her forehead. She wore a heavily brocaded saree, indicating she had married recently. A set of embroidered sarees was found near her.

According to police, the sarees had a ‘Surat’ label on them that proved to be a vital clue in the case. Teams were sent to Agra,Gwalior,Surat,Kanpur,Allahabad,Lucknow and Bareilly. Police also looked into missing reports filed over past few months. Photographs of the deceased were published and flexiboards put up across the city.

On Saturday, one Manohar called to say that the woman in the picture he saw at the Anand Vihar ISBT was his daughter Sandhya (21),police said.

According to police,Sandhya and Singh knew each other for five years, but her family was against the match. She was instead married to a man settled in Bihar a year ago. She,however, left him and came to Delhi, they added.

She contacted Singh and they moved to a friend’s place in Ghaziabad. She kept insisting that he marry her and Singh ultimately decided to get rid of her,Chaudhary said.

“He came prepared with two paper cutters and they left for the park where they got married. Later,as they sat on a bench,Singh pulled out the cutter and slit her throat. He then escaped with her phones, their photographs and voter ID card. He reached home and changed his clothes and threw away his blood-stained jeans near Chander Nagar in Mandawali,” he said.
