While close to 2,500 aspirants turned up at the Delhi University’s final Open Day on Sunday, the queries are pouring in for the university’s helplines. Operators seem to have their hands full,as with the manifold increase in competition, getting good grades does not guarantee admission to the best colleges anymore.

“Even students who have scored a 94 to 95 per cent are anxious to know whether they would make it to courses like the highly sought after BCom (Hons),” said a Delhi University helpline operator. BCom and Economics (Hons) continue to be the most popular courses.

“The introduction of Common Aptitude Test for English (CATE) in 2009 has also significantly increased the popularity of the English (Hons) course” states Roma Banerjee,a helpline operator in the North Campus.

Another new trend is a rise in the number of students coming from NCR,especially Gurgaon, with the Metro corridor opening by October this year.
