Arvind Kejriwal also said the AAP will fight the upcoming Lok Sabha polls on the issue of “full statehood” for the national capital. “My heart says the BJP will lose all seven seats in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.” (PTI Photo) Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal Friday said the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stopped Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “victory chariot” in Delhi, which is why he wants to “destroy the party”.
The AAP convenor also resurrected the party’s pitch for statehood for Delhi yet again following the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, in which its manifesto had revolved around the issue. He expressed certainty about the BJP’s dim prospects in the upcoming polls, announcing that the AAP will fight these on the issue of “full statehood”. “My heart says the BJP will lose all seven seats in the polls,” he said.
Speaking in the Delhi Assembly, Kejriwal said: “On May 13, the Supreme Court passed an order in favour of the elected government and gave it power over services. But they, (BJP) brought an ordinance subverting the order.”
“The PM goes abroad and talks big about democracy but in India, they crush democracy… I have heard about different models of democracy… Westminster, Parliamentary, Presidential… What kind of a model is this where two officers are sitting on the head of the CM? It is the ‘Sanghi’ Model,” he added.
Pointing out how BJP started its “plot” to destroy the AAP government in Delhi, Kejriwal said, “Today, we are going to discuss the Ordinance and the Bill that was passed to destroy Delhi. To understand this, we must go back to 2013… when Modi was going across the country… On December 8, the result came in Delhi and a new party — AAP — was born. No one thought this party with 3-4 people would win… Bahut dukh pahuncha hoga Modi ji ko dil mein… It was a 49-day government but it started working and reduced corruption and 32 officers were sent to jail during that period…”
He added: “In April, the Lok Sabha polls were held. There was a Modi wave across India. But then, the election took place in Delhi (in 2015) and the BJP managed to win only three seats and AAP won 67. The PM’s victory chariot was stopped by AAP in Delhi. It is then that Modiji decided to destroy this party.”
Sharpening his attack, Kejriwal said, “Fir Delhi mei teen ghoda le kar pahunche hai Modiji — ED, CBI and cash. After toppling elected governments in Uttarakhand and Maharashtra, his eyes were on Delhi where he tried to poach our MLAs… But the people of Delhi have elected gems. If Satyendar Jain and Manish Sisodia join the BJP, they will come out of jail tomorrow.”
Taking on Kejriwal over the issue, Leader of Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri invoked Dr B R Ambedkar and said he too was not in favour of “two governments in the capital”.
The architect of the Constitution, Ambedkar, said Bidhuri, had emphasised that there should not be two governments in the capital. “He had advocated for keeping Delhi as a centrally administered territory. When the Supreme Court ruled in favour of granting the Services department to the Delhi government, the Kejriwal government became embroiled in covering up its corruption cases,” Bidhuri alleged.
“The government replaced the Secretary of the Services Department… humiliated senior officers… engaged in various incidents such as stealing files related to the CM’s residence scandal and the liquor scam… the central government had to first issue an ordinance and then enact laws to protect Delhi from corruption. Since the Kejriwal government is deeply involved in corruption, it has been resistant to this step,” Bidhuri claimed.
