A day after releasing the first list of 56 candidates for the Delhi Assembly polls, the Congress is expected to change its candidate from Hari Nagar to accommodate four-time BJP MLA Harsharan Singh Balli.
Citing an error, sources in the Congress said Balli would join the party on Wednesday and would be given a ticket from this constituency.
Balli had quit the BJP last week after he was denied a ticket. I was the only BJP MLA not nominated again for elections even after winning four consecutive elections. I believe an NDA ally was behind this strategy and, hence,I quit the party. In all but name,I am now part of the Congress, Balli said on Tuesday. He said he would officially join the Congress on Wednesday.
According to sources in the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC),Balli would be given a ticket from Hari Nagar.
There were discussions earlier to give Balli a ticket and a name for this seat was not to be declared. However, there might have been some error while releasing the list, a senior party functionary said. He added that even the Hari Nagar Congress unit was open to Balli as a candidate.
Senior party leaders on Tuesday remained engaged in controlling any dissent from local party functionaries and hopefuls who had been denied a ticket. There were some problems in seats such as Mundka and Patparganj, but it has been sorted out for now. There is a lot of time left before the last date to file nominations, a senior leader said.
