MP Harsh Vardhan, Meenakshi Lekhi, Manoj Tiwari and Udit Raj were present to cast their votes as nominated members.
The BJP on Tuesday consolidated its position in the three municipal corporations of Delhi, bagging the positions of mayor and deputy mayor in the North Municipal Corporation by big margins. Prior to this, the party had registered victories in the South and East Municipal Corporations.
Former deputy mayor Ravinder Gupta was elected mayor as he defeated Congress’ Harsh Sharma by 41 votes. MP Harsh Vardhan, Meenakshi Lekhi, Manoj Tiwari and Udit Raj were present to cast their votes as nominated members.
This was the first time that both positions were put to vote in the North corporation. In the previous years, the Congress did not field any candidates as the BJP had the upper hand. Of the 95 votes cast, two were declared invalid. Of this, Gupta secured 67 and 26 voted in favour of Sharma. The same figures were repeated in the deputy mayor’s election in which BJP’s Neelam Goel defeated Guddi Devi from the Congress.
