Additional Sessions Judge Kamini Lau has criticised the government for failing to curb the influx of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants, whose “criminal” activities in India has become a “regular pattern”.

“They come, plunder and go. This has become a regular affair having a definite crime pattern,” Judge Lau said, while sentencing two members of a gang of Bangladeshi robbers. They have been accused of robbing a family in Ashok Vihar in 2011.

The Sessions Court observed that many cases of robbery, dacoity, murder and rape involving Bangladeshi nationals have been detected.

“Bangladeshi influx is one of the major challenges for our country in recent times. It is a matter of national concern. This serious issue requires urgent political debate, government intervention and concerted action, before it becomes too late,” Judge Lau said.

She sentenced Jahangir to life in prison, noting that he was earlier convicted for murder and committed the robbery while on bail. Another Bangladeshi,Mohammed Karim, was given 10 years rigorous imprisonment for the robbery. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 each.

Observing that “the convicts before this court are original residents of Bangladesh who have managed to sneak into our country,” the court asked the “competent authority” to deport them after they served their sentence.
