An auto-rickshaw driver was killed while four others sustained injuries after a cluster bus hit a few vehicles in Southeast Delhi’s New Friends Colony Wednesday evening. Police said the incident took place at Sarai Jullena where the bus rammed into vehicles which had halted due to red light.
The driver of the bus managed to flee from the spot, said police.
According to a PCR call made around 4.45 pm, the bus with passengers on board, coming from Modi Mill Flyover side, hit four-five vehicles, including an auto rickshaw, a Wagon R and Hyundai car and a two-wheeler from behind. When the police reached the spot, they found the two-wheeler lying under the car, and the car in a completely damaged state. The auto-rickshaw was also damaged and had been removed by locals. The bus was damaged from the front side, police added.
DCP (Southeast) Rajesh Deo said, “The cluster bus was going from Mehrauli to Anand Vihar when it hit the cars and auto-rickshaw along with other vehicles on the Kalkaji flyover. The accident was either due to a technical problem (such as brake failure) or due to the driver’s negligence. We are trying to ascertain the reason. The injured were taken to the hospital. The accused driver has not been identified. He managed to flee from the spot.”
The auto-rickshaw driver sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Holy Family Hospital where he was declared brought dead. Police are trying to identify him. The Hyundai car driver, Sajjadul Islam, a doctor at Holy Family Hospital, also sustained injuries. Police said the two-wheeler rider, Md Shagird, works at a saree showroom and is undergoing treatment. Others sustained minor injuries and are stable.
CCTV cameras installed around the scene of the accident are being scanned to ascertain the sequence of events and identify the accused driver, police said. A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered against unknown persons, they added.
