Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday said that Arvind Kejriwal's decision to step down as the Delhi CM is "revolutionary", news agency PTI reported. "Aam Aadmi Party's national convenor @ArvindKejriwal has announced his resignation from the post of chief minister of Delhi after two days… (He) also appealed to the people of Delhi that if he is honest, then they should vote for him in the upcoming Delhi Assembly polls... Only an honest and pro-people thinking leader can say this," Mann said in a post on social media platform X.

This comes after the Speaker called on Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
Days after walking out of Tihar jail following a nearly six-month stint in custody in connection with the excise policy case, Delhi CM Kejriwal made his first visit to the new party headquarters on Sunday morning, where he announced his resignation from the post of the CM in two days. Soon after the announcement, AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said that everyone in the party wants Kejriwal to sit on the chair of the CM. “The objective is to hold elections in November and people say that they consider him honest and he will become the CM again,” Bharadwaj added.
A day earlier, Kejriwal held a meeting with senior AAP leaders to discuss the campaign plan for the upcoming Haryana elections. According to a senior AAP leader, he will lead the party’s political charge along with former deputy CM Manish Sisodia and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. In Delhi, sources said a Cabinet rejig to include Sisodia – Kejriwal’s number two both in the party as well as the government – would be the CM’s first priority, followed by “significant decisions on pending policy and administrative issues”.
After Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he would step down from the post in two days, Delhi BJP president Virendra Sachdeva on Sunday said that the he will "make a U-turn" in that time, and "say that his MLAs have asked him to continue". Madhya Pradesh minister and BJP leader Rakesh Singh on Sunday said that Arvind Kejriwal's decision to "resign as Delhi CM after two days" was "just a sympathy card", alleging that he had realised the anger among people against him. " "A person, who used to speak against dynastic politics and corruption, has decided to resign from CM's post after staying in jail for 177 days in the liquor policy scam," Singh told news agency PTI.
AAP leader Atishi, reacting to Arvind Kejriwal's announcement that he would step down as Delhi Chief Minister in two days, said that to understand his decision, one needs to understand him as a person. "It often happens that politicians are doubted for being corrupt, but today Arvind Kejriwal has said that he only wants votes if people trust him," Atishi said. "Arvind Kejriwal is a person who left his IRS job to work in jhuggi jhopdis, he made a party to fight against corruption from 0...imagine if a person like this is accused of being corrupt then what would happen -- he cannot sleep at night," the Delhi minister added.
Aam Aadmi Party leader and Delhi minister Saurabh Bharadwaj on Sunday said that the CBI was still making attempts to ensure that Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal "remains encaged". "There is no update on when the trial for this case will take place, this is why Arvind Kejriwal has said that he will go through a trial from the public, the public will act as judge and jury now," Bharadwaj said. "There are many people who have seen more politics than i have, but i am sure that nobody has been a CM like this," he added.
Reacting to Arvind Kejriwal's decision to resign as the Chief Minister of Delhi, JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan Prasad said that he has done justice to the people of the Capital. "Not only Arvind Kejriwal, but half a dozen other top leaders of the party were behind bars. People were anguished, but the AAP was busy for getting bail," Prasad told news agency PTI.
Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee chief Devender Yadav on Sunday reacted to Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's speech saying that he would resign from the post in two days. ...Why is he waiting for two days?... If Arvind Kejriwal had tendered his resignation six months ago, the public of Delhi would not have gone through a lot of crisis..." Yadav told news agency ANI. He further dubbed the Delhi CM's decision as "political drama". " ..A new Chief Minister should be appointed as soon as possible...The public of Delhi is aware and they will surely give an answer in the Delhi assembly elections..." Yadav added, as per ANI.
Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Virender Sachdeva, speaking to reporters on Sunday, after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced that he shall resign in two days, came down heavily on him and asked, "If you did not commit any corruption, then why did you scrap the new excise policy."
"Now you are speaking about honesty? You sleep on a Rs 8 lakh bed sheet, relieving yourself in a toilet that costs Rs 4 lakh. Why don't you show this honesty to the people. Call the media to show your sheesh Mahal. You call a woman leader and beat her up. And you speak about honesty," Sachdeva said.
"You shout as much as you want but the people of Delhi know what you have done. Why are you demanding elections in November? Why don't you dissolve the assembly today and conduct polls this month only?" Sachdeva added.
Reacting to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's resignation announcement, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) MP Manoj Jha said that it will put a full stop on Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) political game.

He is saying that he will go along with the people of Delhi and follow the decision they make... Saheb, the people of Delhi have already given their verdict 3 months ago."
"He talks about honesty? Young students have died due to waterlogging, there is no free electricity, electricity bills are hiked by 25 percent. There is water. He talks about education and health, free treatment. But there is a scarcity of medicines, there is no ICU. Fake medicines are found in your govt hospitals. Why has all this happened because you are corrupt," Sachdeva told the reporters.

Delhi BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi, speaking to reporters, after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation in two days, asked what the wait of 48 hours is for?
"Several leaders went to jail. Be it Tamil Nadu former CM Karunanidhi, Jayalalitha of Bihar CM Lalu Prasad Yadav. But Kejriwal is doing a new drama every day. He did not resign when he was in jail but now he is announcing resignation. Why are you now talking about resignation. People want to know what the wait is for 48 hours. Is 48 ghante mai kya settle karne wale hain? (What are you going to settle in these 48 hours?)," Trivedi told the media reporters.
"You have accepted that because of the allegations made against you. Now, what is the necessity of resignation now? Why did you not resign when you were in jail? Now he is also demanding for elections in November. Why? What is the conspiracy?" the BJP leader said.
Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Raghav Chadha on Sunday, soon after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his resignation from the post of the CM in two days, said, "In a country where no one resigns even from the seat of a councillor, our leader Arvind Kejriwal ji has decided to give up the CM's seat by facing the ordeal just because of corruption charges."
"Now the public will confirm that Kejriwal is a staunchly honest person. I am proud to be a worker of such a party," Chadha added.

Soon after Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in his address to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers said that he will resign from the CM's post in two days, party leader Manish Sisodia said that he will not sit on the chair of Deputy Chief Minister right now.
"After two years of legal process, now even the country's top court has told me to go and do my work. But I will not sit on the chair of Deputy Chief Minister-Education Minister right now. I did not come into politics here for the greed of chairs and posts... If the public approves my honesty, only then will I sit on the chair of Deputy Chief Minister-Education Minister and work for education," Sisodia wrote on X.
"I came into politics to work honestly for education. I worked honestly as Delhi's education minister for 10 years. I built schools. I built new universities. As the Education Minister of Delhi, I worked with the mantra that India cannot become a developed nation without providing the best education in government schools. The result of ten years of hard work is visible that today even in the government schools of Delhi, children are studying brilliantly and topping exams like IIT, JEE, NEET. I worked honestly but attempts were made to prove me dishonest by making false allegations against me under petty politics - I was kept in jail for 17 months on false charges," he added.

"Streets roads were constructed in the last ten days, pipelines were laid in the last ten years, which they could not do in the last 75 years. They could not develop all these things. Why because they are frauds. But we are honest," Kejriwal said.
"That is why they put me in jail. Sent the ED and CBI after me. I don't care about the BJP. I care about the people of Delhi," Kejriwal added.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Sunday alleged that the probe agencies sent him to jail to break his spirits, and the party.
"Why did they send me to jail? It was not like I had committed any crime. They also know this. They just want to break my spirit, break my party, poach our leaders, ministers... send ED, CBI to torture our leaders. But our leaders and workers did not break. But I want to tell you today that they strengthened me by sending me to jail," he said.
He also requested all the state CMs to "not resign in any situation. And run the government from jail."
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, in his address to the party workers on Sunday, demanded that the Delhi elections be held in November 2024, instead of February 2025.

He added, "Both Sisodia and I were also stressing about this. He will also not hold any charge. We both will assume our seats when people will elect us."

Today, I bought one book written by Bhagat Singh. When he was in jail, he wrote several letters to his comrades, family, sister, his childhood friends... and the Britishers sent those letters. I also went to jail and I wrote only one letter to L-G Sahab. It was August 15."
"I wrote a letter to L-G Sahab three days before the Independence Day and asked him to permit Atishi to host the Independence Day. I was given warning that if you write another letter, we will stop your meeting with family. I was thinking not even Britishers did such things," Kejriwal said.

Citing Friday’s order by a bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan, Singh demanded to know why the CBI had waited for 22 months to move in on Kejriwal. “The CBI is trapped in Amit Shah’s cage…it arrested Arvind Kejriwal on his directions. Repeating its 2013 observation while hearing the matter on the coal scam, the Supreme Court on Monday said that it was "imperative" that the Central Bureau of Investigation dispel the notion that it was "a caged parrot". A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in a money laundering case connected to the Delhi excise policy. Justice Bhuyan, who wrote a separate judgement, made the observation in his 31-page concurring verdict on the bail plea.
Delhi minister and Aam Aadmi Party leader Atishi on Friday alleged that the BJP had, for the last couple of years, used central agencies like the ED and CBI as a "politcal weapon". Atishi further said that the BJP had left no chance in creating trouble for AAP and its leaders. "Despite conducting hundreds of raids at the residence of AAP leaders, party office, the investigating agencies could not find a single evidence. Why ? Because AAP is an honest party and always stands against corruption," Atishi added.
After the Supreme Court granted bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal earlier today, the Aam Aadmi Party alleged that the top court had "exposed BJP's agenda and lies." "When Congress was in power, Prime Minister Narendra Modi used to accuse the Congress government that it is misusing the investigating agencies like CBI and ED. Now, Modi ji is misusing these agencies more than Congress used to do. Modi ji should apologise," AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said on Friday.
Kejriwal's release warrants have been issued at the Rouse Avenue Court.
Following SC verdict granting bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, his lawyers are at the Rouse Avenue Court in the national capital. Bail bonds will be furnished soon and a release order is expected by 3:00 pm. He will be walking out of Tihar jail any time after 3:30-4:00 pm.
New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj said: "This bail was given because the SC found that there will be delay in investigation but AAP is celebrating as if they are not guilty. The SC has found that the arrest of Mr. Kejriwal is legal and valid. This was found in the ED case and now the CBI case. The investigative agencies had enough evidence, and the SC found that the arrest was legal. He has been stopped from signing any file or going to CM office. The SC may have given him bail, but they have also found that he is the kingpin of the liquor scam."
She was speaking at a press conference at the BJP headquarters at the national capital.
The BJP's reaction came after the top court granted bail to Kejriwal in the case lodged by the CBI and said that prolonged incarceration amounts to unjust deprivation of liberty.
"The Supreme Court has shown a mirror to 'kattar beimaan' (outright dishonest) Arvind Kejriwal while granting bail to him. He should immediately resign after this," BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said during a press conference earlier today.
Bhatia added that Kejriwal continues to be an accused in the case as the court has granted him conditional bail.
Neither have the charges against him been quashed nor has he been acquitted, the BJP leader added.

"From day one we have been saying that this entire matter has been built on the foundation of lies and and who is involved in spreading these lies? Modi ji's government -- the BJP."
"They used the CBI-ED to build this mountain of lies to break Arvind Kejriwal, AAP, its leaders and the Delhi Government. But, the release of all others including Deputy CM Manish Sisodia and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today has broken the BJP's mountain of lies," he added speaking at a press conference after the top court delivered its verdict this morning.
"Kejriwal earned the love of people and made his name by doing good works for the people and country. You cannot keep him behind the bars for long. Today is a very happy day for each and every party worker, the people of Delhi and for the country."
On the Assembly polls in Haryana and Delhi, he said: "Now we will defeat BJP badly in the battle of Haryana and Delhi. The election campaign in Haryana and Delhi will get a boost, after Kejriwal ji comes out of jail."
"The Supreme Court's decision to grant bail to Kejriwal matters a lot in several ways. First of all, the Delhi Government and AAP will get major relief. It is a very emotional day because our brother, son, politician and our guru Arvind Kejriwal will come out of jail, despite BJP's conspiracy,' former Deputy CM Manish Sisodia said today.
"Now, the BJP's multiple attempts to destroy AAP and break the CM , conspiracies will be kept and will be of no use now," he added.
- "The apex court's decision today is not only about Kejriwal's day but it is a tight slap on BJP's face for the dictatorship and misusing the investigating agencies for its personal agenda. BJP has made these agencies as its caged parrot. SC's judge clearly said that CBI is working as a caged parrot."
- "His bail is not only important for the party or government. But it is an important message for the citizens across the country that SC is there to give justice and it will not allow the investigating agencies to be misused."
- "The SC has given a clear message that if anyone will misuse the investigating agencies, the constitution is there to protect the victim."
Kejriwal tops the list of AAP’s star campaigners in Haryana. So, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has got a boost its national convenor getting bail from the Supreme Court today in the run-up to the Haryana Assembly polls in which it is contesting all 90 Assembly seats for the first time.
With the state going to polls on October 5, party workers are “extremely excited” to have him with them.
Apart from Sunita Kejriwal and Mann, other star campaigners of the AAP include Delhi ministers Atishi and Saurabh Bhardwaj and leaders Sanjay Singh and Manish Sisodia.
AAP Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh lashed out at the BJP while reacting to SC granting bail to CM Kejriwal.
"Dictatorship will not work in democracy. It will not work. Dictators bow down, someone who fights is needed. Modi's tyrannical rule could not break the spirit of @ArvindKejriwal. The prison locks were broken @ArvindKejriwaland released. A mountain of lies is falling, ED, CBI, BJP's false case has been exposed. Satyamev Jayate!"
Singh was granted bail by the top court in April this year, almost six months after his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in the Delhi excise policy case on the charge that Rs 2 crore illegal cash changed hands at his residence in New Delhi.
"At last the truth has won... AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal has got bail from the honourable Supreme Court... The bail granted to Kejriwal has proved that the truth can never be suppressed... Long Live the Revolution...," Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann said in a post on X following SC verdict granting bail to the Delhi CM.
Sunita Kejriwal, wife of the Delhi CM, has also reacted on the leader being granted bail by the top court.
"Congratulations to AAP family!📷📷Kudos for staying strong 📷Wishing also the soonest release of our other leaders," she wrote on X.
While Justice Surya Kant said Kejriwal’s arrest by CBI does not suffer from any procedural Infirmity, Justice Bhuyan in a separate judgement raised questions on the necessity and timing of the arrest.
Justice Bhuyan also said the arrest raises more questions than it seeks to answer. He said it is evident that CBI did not feel the need and necessity to arrest Kejriwal for over 22 months and it was only after the trial court granted him regular bail in the to the case registered by the Enforcement Directorate that the CBI activated its machinery and took him into custody. “Such action on the part of the CBI raises a serious question mark on the timing of the arrest rather on the arrest itself.”
"Welcome back, Arvind Kejriwal, we missed you! Truth can be troubled but not defeated! Finally, the Honourable Supreme Court has given its decision to release Delhi's son, Arvind Kejriwal, from the shackles of jail. Thanks to Honorable Supreme Court!" says AAP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha. He took to X after SC pronounced verdict granting bail to CM Kejriwal
- CBI arrest is legal
- Arvind Kejriwal to be released subject to a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh
- Kejriwal cannot make comments about the case in public
- Must be present for trial unless exempted
"Today once again truth has won in the fight against lies and conspiracies. I once again pay my tribute to the thinking and foresight of Baba Saheb Ambedkar ji, who 75 years ago had strengthened the common man against any future dictator," AAP leader Manish Sisodia said on X, reacting to Kejriwal being granted bail today.
The former Delhi deputy chief minister was granted bail by the top court in both the ED and CBI cases on August 9. His bail plea had travelled twice to the SC before this. At the time, the apex court had rejected it following an assurance from the ED that the investigation would be wrapped up expeditiously and the trial would conclude within 6-8 months.
Justice Ujjal Bhuyan says the CBI arrest was only a measure to make meaningless bail in ED case, as per Bar and Bench.
He adds that the CBI must dispel notion of being caged parrot and expressed reservations against bail condition in ED case barring Kejriwal from visiting CM Secretariat or signing files.
Further, he questions timing of Kejriwal's arrest by CBI and that the agency's aim was to frustrate grant of bail to him in ED case.
In first reaction after the SC granted bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, AAP minister Atishi says: "Truth can be troubled, but not defeated"
There will be two judgments in the matter, one by Justice Kant and another by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan.
After Justice Kant, Justice Ujjal Bhuyan gives separate opinion on need and necessity of Kejriwal's arrest.
Justice Kant, in his judgement, said the appellant (Kejriwal) is granted bail.
A bail bond of Rs 10 lakh is to be paid by the CM. Further, he is not allowed to make any public comments on the case.
"Arrest of CM Kejriwal by the CBI does not suffer from any procedural infirmity," says Justice Kant
If Kejriwal walks out of prison — AAP leaders Manish Sisodia and Vijay Nair have received bail in recent weeks in the case, as has Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha — it will be a major boost for the party. But he will have his task cut out, immediately steering the party through the Haryana Assembly elections. Then there is the larger goal: getting the party ready for the Assembly elections in Delhi early next year.
A Bench headed by Justice Surya Kant is reading judgement, which was earlier reserved on September 5.
The court’s cause list for Friday also shows that there will be another judgement by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan.
Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for CM Kejriwal, said the CBI arrest was “unfortunately an insurance arrest”.
“Why I say this is because clearly the CBI did not want to and did not intend to and had no intent to arrest him. But somehow in June 2024, feeling that in case he came out on other charges, you arrested him. The dates, material and grounds of arrest make it clear," he had said in July.
A single judge bench of Justice Neena Bansal Krishna had then reserved its verdict in the Chief Minister’s plea challenging his arrest on June 26 and his interim bail plea
The Supreme Court hearing of two petitions filed by CM Kejriwal is set to begin shortly. Meanwhile, here's a recap of the case for you:
Kejriwal was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on March 21 in a money laundering case linked to the excise case. On June 26, the CBI formally arrested him in a corruption case linked to the alleged scam. The Supreme Court granted him interim bail in the money laundering case on July 12 and he is currently in judicial custody in the CBI’s corruption case.
Opposing Kejriwal's plea, the CBI said that the the ruling AAP government in Punjab is not granting permission to probe the Punjab angle to the case and said that the Delhi CM “is influencing the non-granting of permission”.
Explaining the Punjab angle, the CBI said, “There is a distributor called Mahadev Liquors. He had a wholesale licence, but he was not willing to pay the bribes or part of the bribe. So there was arm-twisting… Excise offices with ulterior motives closed down his distilleries in Punjab. So when he went to the excise department (and asked) why have you closed down, why have you passed an order shutting down my distilleries, he was told your problem doesn’t lie here, your problem lies in Delhi… Finally, he surrendered his licence. The moment he surrendered his wholesale licence, permission was granted to restart the distilleries… The CBI wanted to investigate that angle…”.
Kejriwal has filed two petitions, one challenging the denial of bail and another against the upholding of his arrest by the CBI in the case.
A Bench headed by Justice Surya Kant is set to pronounce the verdict, which was reserved on September 5. The court’s cause list for Friday shows that there will be two judgments in the matter, one by Justice Kant and another by Justice Ujjal Bhuyan.
As of Friday, of the 40 accused in the corruption and money laundering cases linked to the “scam”, only two — Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and businessman Amandeep Singh Dhall — remain behind bars.
