The Central Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday said the Delhi High Court’s decision to award death penalty to 40-year-old Santosh Kumar Singh for the rape and murder of Delhi University student Priyadarshini Mattoo is fully justified as per law.

CBI supports death penalty to convict in Mattoo case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday said the Delhi High Court’s decision to award death penalty to 40-year-old Santosh Kumar Singh for the rape and murder of Delhi University student Priyadarshini Mattoo is fully justified as per law. Arguing in the Supreme Court before a Bench led by Justice H S Bedi,Additional Solicitor General P P Malhotra said the High Court had reversed the sessions court’s decision to acquit Singh following a thorough and correct appreciation of the evidence available. Singh,son of former senior IPS officer,was acquitted by the trial court on December 3,1999,but the Delhi High Court set aside the decision on October 27,2006,and held him guilty. He has appealed against the decision in the Supreme Court. Mattoo was found murdered in her South Delhi home on January 23,1996.

Property dealer,2 others held for double murder
A property dealer was arrested along with two others,including a woman,for allegedly murdering his elder brother and sister-in-law over a property dispute five days ago,the police said. The accused Bhupender (27) had allegedly shot dead his brother Sukhbir (35) and Bimla (45),wife of another brother Hari Chand,in Eshapur village near Jafarpur Kalan on July 16 due to an ongoing property row with the victims over a vacant plot in the area.

Dues not paid,MCD contractors go on strike
Signalling trouble for the cash-strapped Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD),around 3,000 municipal contractors undertaking various developmental projects for the agency announced an indefinite ‘tool-down strike’ on Wednesday,demanding payment of their dues that they claim is pending for months. The civic body,meanwhile,has said that talks are on with the contractors and the issue will be resolved very soon.

Counselling for SC/ST students today: DU
The Delhi University has announced a second counselling session for SC/ST students,with 1,059 vacant seats in the Arts stream and 697 seats in the Science courses. “Around 1,500 students listed for a counselling session on Thursday should appear for it if they are interested,“ said a press note signed by the Dean of Students’ Welfare S K Vij. Candidates are advised to log on to the university website http://www.du.ac.in for more details on the counselling session.

HC seeks govt response on power rates
Admitting a petition that claimed consumers in the city are forced to pay Rs 300 crore extra every month for electricity consumption,the Delhi High Court on Wednesday sought responses from the state government and the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC). A Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra issued notices on a petition filed by BJP leader Nand Kishore Garg against the government for not notifying new tariff rates as per the DERC recommendations. As per the petition,the three private power discoms were earning an additional profit of Rs 300 crore per month due to the government’s decision to hold back revised tariff plan.

Recover girl’s passport from parents,cops told
The Delhi High Court on Wednesday directed the city police to recover the passport of a girl from her parents,who was being forced into a marriage by them. The parents of Shubha Arya,18,had called her back from the United States and were forcing her to get married. Arya had earlier approached the court,claiming that she was called back on the pretext that her father was seriously ill but on reaching India,she realised that this was a ploy to marry her. Her belongings,including certificates and passport,were snatched by her parents and she was detained at home,she said in the petition.
