Arjun eyes top honours in youth Olympics

Arjun Singh may not be as experienced as some of the other athletes in the fray he will be up against at the Asian All Stars meet, but the young discus thrower is confident of giving them tough competition.

At 18,Arjun is a national record holder in the National Youth Athletics Championships with a throw of 64.09m.

He won gold at the recent Delhi state athletics championships despite being injured for the past 15 days, and feels he could have done much better in terms of improving his performance but for a twisted ankle. “I could have done better had I not have a pain in my ankle. Though I won gold,it affected my turning while throwing. Nevertheless,I am feeling a lot better and a day or two’s rest will see me throwing like before,” said Arjun, while speaking to Sportline.

With hardly any time to prepare for the Asian All stars and yet to recover completely,Arjun felt the Delhi meet was good for practice. “I am confident enough and I aspire for a medal as I have done well in the past. My injury is fine and I want to give my best here,” he said.

Training under coach Suresh Yadav,Arjun felt he is still to improve his technique. His turning while throwing needs to be worked upon for better results and his training schedule is designed to focus more on skills than on fitness. “The more I throw, the better I’ll get. My fitness is fine but I have to work hard on my skills. International players like Ehsan Haddadi throw well because they are adept with their skills,” Arjun said.

The thrower also had no problems in dealing with a heavier duscus. The one at the CWG test event will weigh 2 kg,whereas Arjun competes with a 1.75 kg discus in the youth category. In fact,he said he was excited to see international throwers in action which would help him learn how to handle pressure.

Going to participate in the Youth Olympics games in Singapore in mid August,Arjun is concentrating on improving his national record at the Asian All stars and the Commonwealth Games test event immediately after that.

“I concentrate on one event at a time and my aim is to garner medals for India so that my confidence level remains on a higher note,” he said.
