All public vehicles to have GPS devices by Feb 20

All auto-rickshaws, gramin sewas, contractual buses, among other vehicles, have been asked to get GPS devices installed.

The government has asked all public service vehicles (PSV) owners to ensure that a GPS device is installed in their vehicles by February 20.

All auto-rickshaws, gramin sewas, contractual buses, among other vehicles, have been asked to get GPS devices installed to prevent any penal action against them. According to an earlier order, these PSVs were asked to install GPS devices by September 30, last year.
“Some of the PSVs have still not installed GPS devices, despite earlier orders. We have now issued a revised deadline and asked them to inform the Transport department about compliance with the orders,’’ an official said.

The move to install GPS devices in vehicles was taken after the December 16 gangrape incident, in which a 23-year-old woman was gangraped aboard a moving bus.

The Home Ministry had issued certain guidelines, which included installation of GPS in public vehicles.
