After the National Green Tribunal (NGT) pulled up the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) for failing to check burning of waste in areas under its jurisdiction, the civic body on Friday imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 on an employee of Meghalaya House for burning leaves.
Elaborating on the incident, a senior NDMC official said, “An employee of Meghalaya House, Sri Chand, was burning leaves and other waste products in the building’s premises on Thursday morning. As soon as the council received information about this, the Delhi Police and the Fire Department were informed. Officials from these departments reached the spot and an FIR was registered against the employee.”
This is the first time that the civic body has imposed such a penalty in a case of burning of dry leaves, NDMC officials said.

“We have also issued a notice to Chand stating that he has been found guilty. We have imposed a penalty of Rs 5,000 on him for polluting the environment. He has been asked to pay the fine or appear before the NGT on May 18,” NDMC Public Relations Officer Jagjiwan Bakshi said.
Meanwhile, in order to ensure that such incidents do not take place in future, the NDMC has also constituted surveillance teams to keep a vigil on any incidence of burning of dry leaves, plastic and other kinds of garbage in areas under its jurisdiction.
“To curb the incidence of burning of dry leaves in NDMC areas, two teams have been constituted to carry out daily field inspections and check and monitor any incidence of burning of dry leaves, garbage and plastic. These teams shall also take suo moto action according to the NGT’s order,” Bakshi said.
Last month, the NGT had rapped the civic body for its inability to check burning of waste in Lodhi Gardens. It had also asked the NDMC to be more vigilant in such cases.
