After the Delhi Metro, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has decided to deploy specially trained women personnel at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) as well. The women personnel have been trained in Filipino martial arts form, Pekiti-Tirsia Kali (PTK), to take on an attacker unarmed.
According to airport officials, these women have been trained to incapacitate an attacker with the use of everyday objects such as hair pins, belts, shoe laces, pens etc. Officials said the idea is to ensure that there is minimum use of weapons and least harm is done when dealing with suspects.
Sources in the CISF said while a women commando squad was already being trained to secure the Delhi Metro, it was realised that a similar squad should be deployed at the airport as well since IGIA is one of the 22 ‘hyper-sensitive’ airports.
Officials said soon, both male and female CISF personnel deployed at at industrial units such as power and steel plants, the Taj Mahal, Red Fort and other such areas, would be trained in the art form.
“Wherever there is movement of people in a concentrated area, such skills benefit the force and passengers, who will have a sense of security. The idea is to improve operational preparedness, training and welfare of the force,” an airport official said.
For now, only personnel in-charge of VIP security are being trained in the art form.
“It is easy to whip out a weapon when facing a suspect. But firing poses a grave risk and one has to be careful. If we have women commandos specially trained in this art form, the squad can be deployed for exigencies,” an official said.
The training, sources said, will begin with a team of 25 women personnel at the IGIA, where at nearly 700 women personnel are deployed. “Each session will include 25 personnel and each session will last 21 days,” the official said.
