India’s “undereducated” Prime Minister was the primary investor backing industrialist Gautam Adani, and both “looted the country” in pursuit of Modi’s ambition to “become the richest person on Earth”, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal alleged in a relentless attack on the duo during his address to the Delhi Legislative Assembly Tuesday.
Money invested in the Adani Group “belonged to the PM”, the Chief Minister alleged, adding that the businessman was “just the manager” of funds Modi had. Kejriwal said he had spoken to a BJP leader who said Modi was not helping Adani because they are friends. “The leader said he (Modi) has never done anything for anyone — his wife, mother, brother or any relative… He said he was helping Adani because… Adani is just the front; the main investor behind him is Modi,” Kejriwal alleged.
“Narendra Modi is looting the nation with both his hands. He has taken the ports, airports and so many other resources that belong to the country. The BJP in the last 8-9 years has looted twice the amount Congress looted since independence,” Kejriwal alleged.
“Our PM is less educated and is greedy to earn more money, and other entities are taking advantage of this… I think that he is the most corrupt Prime Minister that this country has ever seen,” he alleged. He supported a resolution passed by the Assembly against the “Adani Scam” and demanded a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) investigation into it.
The BJP was quick to go on the offensive, accusing the Chief Minister and AAP MLAs of “behaving like the government of Pakistan”, using “indecent and derogatory language”, and said it was a ploy by the “corruption-ridden” AAP to run a “personal campaign against the Prime Minister” to divert public attention from “its corruption stories”.
Kejriwal said, “Recently when the PM went to Sri Lanka, he met President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and put pressure on him to give the wind project to the Adani Group. Narendra Modi did not pressure Sri Lanka to give the project to Gautam Adani, but he ensured that he got the project.”
“Adani is the brain behind PM Modi. He is the one who tells PM Modi where to invest and which country to sign deals with. He manages everything of the PM and tells him which leaders to put the CBI and ED behind,” he also alleged.
When the PM went to Bangladesh, Kejriwal alleged further, the host country wanted to buy 1,500 MW of electricity from India for 25 years, and the PM “ensured that this project went to Adani Group — and basically to himself”. Similarly, when PM Modi went to Israel, several defence projects were initiated and went to the Adani Group, the Chief Minister alleged.
Kejriwal accused the BJP-led Centre of getting raids conducted by the ED or CBI and putting pressure on the Adani Group’s business opponents “to let go of the business” following which Adani overtook it.
In 2014, as per the Chief Minister, Adani was the 609th richest person in the world and recently he became second richest before the Hindenburg Research report triggered losses for it. Kejriwal added he was “worried” as the PM “had become a puppet” and was being “managed by Gau-tam Adani”; when a delegation from abroad came to India, the PM was “told to do just two things”. “The first is to hug the political leader and the second is to ensure that the contract is given to the Adani Group…in the 17th and 18th century, our rulers at the time were not educated and the British would come and make deals and make them sign as per their wishes… This is what is being repeated presently,” he alleged.
Leader of the Opposition Ramvir Singh Bidhuri accused the AAP-led Delhi government of working in a “dictatorial and unconstitutional manner” in the Assembly.
“Keeping aside all the rules and traditions, such topics are being discussed, which do not come under the purview of Delhi itself. Even the AAP MLAs of Delhi used indecent and derogatory language towards the respected Prime Minister…They made objectionable and baseless allegations against the central government like promoting drugs and global terrorism,” Bidhuri alleged.
“The resolution was presented in the Assembly as the Government of Pakistan had presented a resolution against the Government of India and AAP MLAs also spoke the language of Pakistan… we will take up this unconstitutional and anti-national act of the Delhi assembly with the President of India,” the LOP added.
Delhi BJP spokespersons Harish Khurana and Praveen Shankar Kapoor accused the AAP of “running a personal campaign” against the Prime Minister “to divert public attention from its corruption stories” and that more the hatred they spread against the Prime Minister, the “more political loss they will cause to their party”.
