Twenty days after two men robbed Rs 30 lakh worth of gold ornaments from a house in South East Delhi’s Bhogal area, the Delhi Police said that they have arrested the main accused. The police, however, said the accused had already given the jewellery to a goldsmith for melting.

The arrested has been identified as Mohammed Nazran, 52, a resident of Nalbandan Gali, Shah Ganj Chowk, Ajmeri Gate, Old Delhi. During interrogation, it was revealed that Nazran had spent 13 years in Bengaluru jail after being convicted of his wife’s murder in 2007. He was released in 2019 and became involved in a series of robberies, the police said.

According to the police, the burglars broke into the house on Masjid Lane on September 20, when its owner, Junaid Khan, was away.

“The complainant, Khan, stated that he had left his home on September 20 around 1 pm and, upon returning around 2 am on September 21, found the main entrance latch broken and the house in a ransacked state. He further reported the theft of gold ornaments — 4 sets, two chains, 15 rings, 4–5 pairs of earrings, five pendants, and one pair of bangles —along with 1,600 Qatari Riyal, passport, important documents, and jewellery bills,” Hemant Tiwari, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South East, said.

Upon examining CCV footage, the police discovered that two men had entered Junaid’s first-floor apartment at night. They followed the video trail, which led them to Daryaganj, where one of the accused was identified.

“Local inquiries regarding the suspect led to his identification as Mohd. A trap was subsequently laid, and the accused was apprehended by the team from Jama Masjid police station,” DCP Tiwari added.

The officer said that Nazran committed the theft with his friend and later handed over the stolen gold to a goldsmith in Gokalpuri for melting.
