With four bottles of water that had “7 ppm of ammonia and chlorine”, each labelled with the names of Home Minister Amit Shah, Delhi BJP chief Virendra Sachdeva, Haryana CM Nayab Singh Saini and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, the AAP challenged the leaders to take a sip at a press conference or issue a public apology.

AAP national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, during a press conference, said the Nayab Singh Saini-led Haryana government had ignored appeals from the Delhi government to rectify the problem of ammonia entering the riverstream from the neighbouring state.

Kejriwal said, “Today, we have kept bottles of 7 ppm ammonia water mixed with chlorine. The BJP and Congress have joined forces — both are playing with the health and lives of the people of Delhi. We are sending these bottles to: Amit Shah, Virendra Sachdeva, Nayab Singh Saini and Rahul Gandhi. Let these four leaders drink this ammonia-mixed water in a press conference. If they do, we will accept that we were wrong,” he said.

The EC has sent notices to Kejriwal for calling the water “poisonous”.

During the press conference, Kejriwal said, “Toxic water means that the level of ammonia in it has risen significantly — up to 7 ppm. Ammonia at this level is extremely dangerous to health; it can cause irreversible damage to multiple organs and pose a severe health hazard. It can even be fatal — exposure to such high levels of ammonia in water can lead to death.”

He said his party raised this issue a few days ago because it was left with no choice. “… Atishi ji called Nayab Singh Saini ji — once, twice, three times, four times — requesting him to take action, as the rising ammonia levels posed a threat to lives.”

Hitting back at Kejriwal, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Thursday released a video flagging the issue of pollutants in Yamuna and challenged Kejriwal to take a dip in it.

In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said, “Kejriwal ji, now 2025 has come. When will you take a dip in the Yamuna? Delhi is waiting!”
