AAP’s Atishi urges Delhi CM to offer relief package for flood-hit families: ‘Thousands lost their homes, belongings’

Senior Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader and Leader of Opposition at the Delhi assembly, Atishi, on Monday urged Chief Minister Rekha Gupta to announce an immediate relief package for families affected by the Yamuna flooding, saying thousands had lost their homes and belongings after being submerged for over 10 days.

With floodwaters receding from low-lying areas of the Capital, families returning home are now being confronted with the devastation left behind.

In a statement to the media, Atishi said that she received a call from Reena Devi, a resident of Yamuna Bazaar, who broke down while speaking to her about the devastation. “She told me that when she returned home after the water level went down, she saw that nothing was left. All her household goods have been washed away. Whatever was left had become ruined after being submerged in water for 10 days,” the former CM said.

Atishi said Devi’s situation reflects the plight of thousands of families in Delhi. “These families have not been able to go to work for 10 days due to the floods, and will not be able to go to work for many more days. Rs 18,000 should immediately be given to the adult member of each family based on the monthly minimum wages,” she said.

She also demanded that compensation be given to families based on the loss incurred at their homes, and that children who lost their school supplies be supported. “The children who lived in these houses have lost all their notebooks, books, pens, and pencils. Every child, whether they study in a public school or a private school, should be given compensation for notebooks,” she said.

Atishi added that farmers who lost their crops should be given Rs 20,000 in compensation and called for relief camps to be set up to help residents reissue damaged official documents.

She alleged that there was fear and uncertainty among flood-hit residents because of the government’s inadequate response. “There is fear in the hearts of people that the government did not provide any facilities in the relief camps. There was no electricity, no proper food, so today thousands of families are worried about whether the government will help them,” she said.

Rekha Gupta ji, as the Chief Minister of Delhi, it is your responsibility to support these families. It is time to act,” Atishi added.
