A fortnight from now,the worlds number one DJ (according to DJ Mag,a popular British magazine) will begin his first tour of India. Born Pierre David Guetta, but known to the world as David Guetta, this Frenchmans brand of house music has won him millions of fans world over, and numerous Number One singles. Headlining the second edition of the Eristoff Invasion Music Festival,he will begin his tour in Delhi on March 9,continue to Pune the day after and finish with a performance in Bengaluru on March 11.
At the age of 18,Guetta discovered house music and became one of the first DJs in France to play the genre. Then,he went to London and watched British DJ Danny Rampling play at his club,Shoom. The experience of listening to house music there,he says, changed his life.
House music was a revolution for the music scene, also socially, because it opened peoples minds, he explains, adding that this was primarily because it was a genre that was born in gay clubs. This being the 80s,house music wasnt being played on the radio yet,so when people started going to raves and clubs to listen to it,it became something of a secret code,he says.
Since then, however, house music has come a long way and in recent years,Guetta has been one of the leading pioneers. In August last year,he released his fifth studio album,Nothing But The Beat, featuring a number of popular musicians such as Usher,Nicki Minaj, and Chris Brown. While the music on this album, true to Guettas style, continues to fall under the broader spectrum of dance music, there are some interesting and different sounds. This,Guetta attributes to influences from other artistes. My roots are firmly in dance music but artistes such as Kings of Leon and Coldplay influence me too, says the 44-year-old. Titanium, which, last week, became Guettas fourth number one single in the UK,is a ballad featuring Australian recording artist Sia,that combines elements of pop music with house.
He will travel to India with his festival set a set up of lights and stage decor that has accompanied him to some of the biggest festivals around the world.
