6 coaches of Kalka Shatabdi damaged in stone-pelting in Sonepat, 1 injured

One passenger of the Kalka Shatabdi suffered minor injuries after a group of children threw stones at the moving train near Sonepat, Haryana, on Thursday evening. Windows of six coaches were damaged in the stone-pelting, railway officials said.

The train had departed New Delhi railway station at 5.15 pm. The incident took place around 5.45 pm. According to passengers, a group of children, aged between 9-14 years, started pelting stones at the train. Windows of coaches E-1, C-9, C-8, C-5, C-4, C-2 were damaged, officials said.

The injured man was identified as Monu Sharma (45), a resident of Chandigarh. He suffered minor cuts on his head and was given first-aid.

Sunita Verma, a resident of Solan, Himachal Pradesh travelling in coach C-4, said, “I was sitting near the window when, all of a sudden, I heard a loud noise and a stone hit the window glass. I saw a group of six-seven children pelting stones. A few women were watching them from the fields.”

Anil Kumar, a resident of Kalka, said, “I was woken up by a loud noise. The outside screen of the window was broken and I saw a few children picking up more stones and pelting it at the moving train.”

Train Ticket Examiner Kulwant Singh said, “There has been several such cases on this route but, this was the first time that windows of so many coaches have been damaged. A report of this incident will be sent to the Northern Railway officials and the Government Railway Police.”

“We have spoken to all passengers. However, no one is ready to register a complaint in the matter.” a Government Railway Police officer said.
