‘Geek squad’ which cheated, extorted US senior citizens via online ads busted: Cops

The matter came to light after two US citizens approached the US embassy in India and lodged a complaint against a gang who were extorting money from senior citizens in the US.

The Delhi Police Special Cell arrested 5 men from different parts of the country and busted a gang, ‘Geek Squad’, who cheated United States citizens of 625,000 dollars.

HGS Dhaliwal, Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell) said the complainants alleged they lost all their life savings.

“During investigation, it was found that one of the accused is from Kolkata while the others are from Bhubaneswar and Delhi,” said Dhaliwal.

They posed as tech support staff but later told the customers that all their data had been hacked, the police said. Under fear of losing everything, accused would extort all the money from the victim account’s to theirs.

The accused, Kunal Singh (31) was arrested from Mehrauli, Delhi. Police said he and his school classmate Subrat Das started the ‘Geek Squad’. Das was arrested from Orissa. Das’ friend Suman (26) was arrested from Kolkata while Singh’s associates Gautam and Amit were held from Delhi’s Pitampura and Rohini.

Police said the accused also ran fake Google ads by showing false toll-free-numbers on Google search engine. Further, the gang pushed pop-ups in windows systems, which catch the user’s immediate attention, said the police.
